All patients should see a physician prior to undertaking any therapy program or beginning a medication regimin.

Musculoskeletal pain has many causes. Injuries(muscle, bone, ligament, and tendons), inflammation, related degenerative disorders, and referred pain are a few.

Most injuries trigger inflammation which causes release of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause pain. The anti inflammatory medications help with this. Cortisone also helps with this type of pain. Frequently joint or bone pain is associated with muscle spasm. Muscle relaxers can help with this type of pain. Heat, ultrasound, TENS, and stretching can also help. Often once the spasm abates, the range of motion exercises can be started (physical therapy).

I try to address not only the X-ray/MRI findings, but also the frequently associated muscle spasm and reduced mobility (frequently associated with bone and joint injuries). Frequently the pain (syndrome) is "regional" and does not just come from the inflamed joint. Frequently once the joint mobility is improved, the pain sometimes improves.
